8.    ‘Forbidden Envy’ is what led to the murder of Habil. What type of envy is permissible and what is the Arabic term for this?
    •    The type of ‘envy’ where we are Happy that our brother/sister has a particular favour/ability/trait and we pray that Allah (SWT) also grants the same to us

10.    How can you reconcile the Islamic teaching of ‘Self Defence’ with Habil’s Statement mentioned in the Holy Quran: “Even if you extend your hand toward me to kill me, I will not extend my hand toward you to kill you…”?
    •    Notice that Habil says “I will not extend my hand toward you to kill you..” meaning that he will still defend himself but not with the intention of killing his brother. So this does not contradict the Islamic requirement of self-defence.

11.    Explain how the story of Habil and Qabil teaches us to refrain from commiting sins and become more God conscious. Give references to atleast 2 Quranic verses in your answer that are directly relevant to this story.

    •    In 5:28: Qabil threatens to kill Habil. Habil replies: “…I will not extend my hand toward you to kill you, indeed I fear Allah (SWT) the Lord of the worlds”.  Here the reason why Habil does not wish to kill his brother is because he is ever conscious of Allah’s (SWT) presence and fears disobeying Allah (SWT). This teaches us to also be ever conscious of Allah’s (SWT) presence and fear the consequences of disobeying him and in this way refrain from committing sins.

    •    In 5:27 Habil said to Qabil: “Allah accepts only from the Godwary”. ‘Godwary’ here re-inforces the message that we should be Concious of Allah (SWT) at all times in order for our actions to be accepted by him.
