POSTPONEMENT OF AGM AND ELECTIONS DUE TO CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC – UPDATE
29 July 2020
I pray this finds you well InshAllah.
Further to my previous communication to members regarding the postponement of our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections this year in light of the coronavirus pandemic (which can be found here), the EC (together with the Electoral Commission) have revisited the AGM and election decisions in light of (1) current government guidance and an expected coronavirus second wave towards the end of the year; and (2) the resignation of the President following his election to the post of interim vice president of the WF.
We wish to inform you of the following decisions with respect to the AGM and elections:
• AGM will take place on 20 September 2020 • Elections will take place on 6 September 2020
By holding the AGM and elections earlier than previously advised, our aim is (a) to conduct these key events in the spirit of our Constitution and in a manner which is both safe for members and in accordance with government health guidance; (b) avoid the need for multiple elections (as our Constitution prescribes that, following the resignation of a President, an election for the post of President is also required within 6 weeks of such resignation).
The EC (together with the Electoral Commission, as appropriate) will revisit the AGM and election decisions and arrangements periodically. Should it become necessary to alter the arrangements (set out above) we will inform members accordingly.
In the leadup to the Shahadat of the fifth Imam, Imam al-Baqir (as), we have put together a series of short clips entitled ‘Thinking it through’, looking at strengthening our Aqaaid with a focus on Tawhid and Adalat. Topics include: proving God’s Existence, proving the Oneness of God, and understanding His Justice. They will be released daily inshAllah.
The videos can be found below – click on the top right (three lines and an arrow) to see the rest of the series.
I am writing to inform you that following the election of Dr Munir Datoo to interim vice president of WF, he has (as required by the WF) resigned from his position as President of Hujjat with immediate effect.
Until Hujjat elections are held (for which details will be provided in a separate communication) the post of President will be assumed by Br. Altaf Daya (our current Vice President).
I am sure you will join me in wishing both Dr Munir Datoo and Br Altaf Daya success in their new roles and thanking them for the continued service to our community.
